1. What to do when you become pregnant

If you become pregnant, visit the Child Health Section (kodomo hoken gakari) in the Health and Welfare Department (hoken fukushi bu) of your local ward office at your earliest convenience, and submit a pregnancy notification (ninshin todoke). 

At that time, you will be given: the Maternal and Child Health Handbook (boshikenko techo) (pink); the Sukusuku Handbook (yellow); vaccination vouchers (yobousesshuken tsuzuri), a Maternal Health Management Card (bosei kenkoukanri sidoujikou renraku card) (blue); and maternity health checkup vouchers (ninpu kenkoushinsa hojoken). 

Pregnancy notification forms are available at the Child Health Section of each ward office. Currently, the Maternal and Child Health Handbook is produced in nine foreign languages (English, Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, Spanish, Portuguese, Thai, Filipino, and Indonesian). 
 

At the Kobe International Community Center (KICC), you can borrow a video titled, "From Pregnancy to Childcare - How to prepare for Childcare in Japan" (available in Japanese, English, Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, Spanish, Portuguese, and Thai), produced by a specified non-profit organization, the AMDA International Medical Information Center.

2. What to do when you give birth

• When you give birth, submit a birth notification (shussho todoke) to the Citizen Services Division (shimin ka) of your local ward office within 14 days after the birth.
  
  

  Please bring the following items to the ward office

  Birth notification, your personal stamp (if you have one), and your Maternal and Child Health Handbook
  
• If your child/children wish to apply for special permanent resident, father or mother go through the procedures at the Citizen Services Division within 60 days after the birth.
  
  

  Please bring the following items

  Special resident certificate (or alien registration certificate) of father or mother, birth notification certificate (shussho todoke shoumeisho), a copy of resident certificate, and passport (if you have one).

For detailed information, inquire at the Child Health Section (kodomo hoken gakari) of your local ward office or the Preventive Hygiene Division (yobou eisei ka) of the Public Health Center (hokensho) of Kobe City (078-322-6789).

4. Play areas for children to enjoy recreational and hands-on learning activities

Kobekko Land offers an ideal venue for children to enjoy recreational and hands-on activities and friendly interactions, with its play room, library, computer room, arts and crafts room, and music studio. Here, various interesting events are held monthly, such as a cooking class, concert, and a puppet show. 

5. Consultation regarding the education of schoolchildren of foreign nationality

The Multicultural Children's Center of the Hyogo Prefectural Board of Education offers consultation services regarding the education of schoolchildren of foreign nationality. At the center, various educational tools and relevant materials are exhibited, some of which are available for loan.
