Japanese-Language Proficiency Test JLPT The number of people studying the Japanese language around the world is growing quickly. Opportunities for students of Japanese in other countries to actually employ their Japanese language skills are also on the increase. This has led to an increase call for a means to objectively measure and provide accreditation for the proficiency of the Japanese language skills acquired by these students. The Japanese-Language Proficiency Test was established in 1984 in response to these demands.

The J.Test of Practical Japansese was established as a test for objectively measuring the Japanese language abilities of foreign nationals in 1991. The test is taken by approximately 70,000 people per year including office workers, exchange students, and Japanese language school students. The test is held 6 times throughout the year.

The JSST is a simple Japanese conversation test which can be taken over the phone. The tests ability to easily measure Japanese language operational capability results in it being taken by a large number of Japanese language students and businesses. The JSST is different from paper tests which measure Japanese language related knowledge, but instead is a test which measures Japanese language operational capabilities. Vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation and other Japanese language related knowledge is combined "in that time and place" to measure the ability to carry on conversations. Speaking means using one's own ideas and creativity. Test participants are faced with problems which force this "thinking" and "creating" and actually having them speak in Japanese allows for measurement of the Japanese language operational capabilities which is needed in the business place.

Business Japanese Proficiency Test BJT
The BJT is a proficiency test measuring the examinee's current communicative proficiency in business in Japanese language. The results are processed statistically based on item response theory (IRT) to produce a score from 0-800, and evaluated on a scale of six levels from J5 to J1+.The BJT can measure the absolute value of the examinee's proficiency, providing an objective grasp of changes in proficiency.
